About
Sharafat Ali is an Associate Professor (Docent) in Glass Science and Technology and Materails Chemistry at Linnaeus University, Sweden. His research focuses on the design, synthesis, processing, characterization and modelling of advanced inorganic materials, with particular emphasis on oxide and oxynitride glasses, glass-ceramics, functional thin films, hard optical coatings and sustainable glass materials.
His research explores composition–processing–structure–property relationships in complex amorphous and partially crystalline systems. Key areas include nitrogen-rich oxynitride glasses and thin films, rare-earth-doped functional materials, mechanically durable and optically functional coatings, glass-ceramics for energy technologies, materials characterization, surface modification, circular materials and the valorisation of complex industrial waste streams.
His work combines melt-quenching, controlled crystallisation, reactive sputtering, thermal processing, spectroscopy, diffraction, microscopy, mechanical testing and data-driven materials modelling. He is particularly interested in developing predictive approaches that connect glass chemistry and atomic structure with optical, thermal, mechanical, electrical and environmental performance.
He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is a co-inventor of three granted United States patents. He has extensive experience in research leadership, university teaching, graduate supervision, laboratory development, international academic collaboration and industry–academia innovation projects.
His current research priorities include transparent high-nitrogen oxynitride glasses, functional glass-ceramics for energy conversion and storage, durable optical coatings, materials design, and circular processing routes for contaminated and difficult-to-recycle glass.
