About
Irfan Mulla is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IISc. His current research interest includes the experimental investigation of soot and NOx formation during the combustion process. Soot and NO concentrations are measured using laser-induced incandescent (LII) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques. Apart from this, turbulent mixing and soot formation as a function of fuel type and combustion mode are being investigated in academic flames. The generated pollutant database in laminar flames will help the chemical kinetics academic community in validating or developing better mechanisms for emission predictions.
Dr. Mulla received a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Pune University, and PhD in the Aerospace Department with combustion as a specialization from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. He was a visiting researcher at University College London, where he worked on heat release rate imaging, and laser-induced spark ignition. Irfan has investigated pollutant formation (soot, PAH, NO) in gaseous and spray turbulent flames during his postdoc stay in CNRS, France, at CORIA lab. These works also generated benchmark databases containing a range of parameters for the validation of numerical models. At Imperial College London, Irfan developed three-dimensional laser diagnostic techniques to investigate turbulent mixing in swirl flows.
