Sushil Kumar received his MSc Physics (Electronics) degree from St. John’s College (Agra University, India) in 1989 and Ph.D. degrees in Physics (Space Physics) from Barkatullah University, Bhopal, India. The Ph.D. work was carried out under the All India Coordinated Program on Ionospheric Thermospheric Studies (AICPITS) sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. He had participated in the XVIIIth Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica, during December 1998 to March 1999, during his post-doctoral fellowship.
In 2002, he joined the faculty in the Physics Department of The University of the South Pacific (USP), Fiji. He initiated the research in the area of ELF-VLF propagation and the D-region in collaboration with Worldwide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) in 2003 http://wwlln.net/ and further extended by installing the SoftPAL system. He later extended the research into upper ionosphere using GPS to study TEC and L1 band and scintillations. His current area also includes effect of the natural Hazards (e.g., tropical cyclones, earthquakes, Space Weather Events etc) on the upper atmosphere using different radio wave techniques. He carries out collaborative research work with several well reputed institutes and universities across the world. He is a recipient of USP’s Vice-Chancellor’s prize for Research Excellence-2009, Best Research Publication (2015) and Vice-Chancellor’s prize for Teaching Excellence (2018). He is an author/co-author of more than 85 journal publications and 60 conference presentations and had chaired/convened several sessions in conferences/Symposia/workshops.
