Atul Kulkarni is currently associated with INDSRO Defence and Aerospace Technologies Pvt. Ltd: Pune, Maharashtra, IN.
He received his MS (1995) from Department of Instrumentation Science, University of Pune and Ph. D. from Department of Physics, University of Pune in 2005, India. During and prior to his Ph.D. pursuit, he worked in Indian industries for more than 17 years (from 1989 to 2005) in different disciplines such as process control & automation, magnetic material development and specialized instrument development for Indian defence sector. Especially, his key achievements were total indigenization of (i) Ekran power supply module which is used in MIG-29 and Sukhoi aircrafts and (ii) “Audio-Visual warning devices” for Indian Military which is in use in T-72 and BMP military tanks. After his Ph.D. he was instrumental in establishing “Centre for Sensor Studies” at Pune University in 2006. Besides, he extended consultancy services to many industries in and around Pune during the period 2000 - 2005.
In Dec. 2006, he was offered postdoctoral fellowship at SKKU, the leading “world class university” in South Korea. Since then, he is actively involved in multidisciplinary sensor development and Nano-bio materials for device integration. In the recent past, he has published more than 70 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals. There are 10 patents (Korean, US and PCT) to his credit. He has been invited in USA, Australia, Germany, Spain and Italy to present his novel research outcomes. He has been guiding masters and Ph.D. students in SKKU. His most momentous accomplishment was the Samsung Award for “Best Prototype Development of SPR Sensor for Biomedical Applications”. In 2012, he received prestigious Brain Pool Fellowship of KOFST (Govt. of Korea) to utilize his expertise in developing cutting-edge technology for the host Korean Company. Most recently, he received research grant (~USD 50000/ year) from NRF Korea for three years to pursue the research in Basic Sciences. He is also engaged in teaching “Integrated Nano Systems” to MS/Ph.D. students in SKKU.
He is actively involved in collaborative research activities between Korea and India by way of signing MOU between SKKU and premier institutes in India like C-MET Pune, University of Pune, and Institute of Science, Mumbai. Recently with his initiative, Yonsei University in South Korea and Pune University in India received DST-NRF 2015 research grant for three years wherein he is one of the researchers from Korea. Apart from his academic activities in South Korea, he has spread his wings in the arena of Industrial collaboration and consultations. From 2007, he is consultant to Korean Company, BIO-FD&C where he established RF technology for the plant cell growth.
In 2014, he founded Biotech research firm (Ggenex) in Pune in collaboration with BIO-FD&C to promote the core technology for the development of innovative products from the perspective of Indian biodiversity and Ayurveda. Counting upon his diversified academic and industry contributions, his dream is to establish student-centric “Multidimensional Research Foundation” in India to compliment “Look at the East” and “Make-in-India” movement.
