About
Saba has made significant contributions in the area of interdisciplinary science (molecular genetics, Food & Nutrition) to improve the nutrition quality of wheat and medicinal plants specifically Stevia rebaudiana and camellia sinensis (Tea). Various genomic tools application is the aim of his research for global food and nutritional target. He has developed extensive single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genomic resources and metabolomic profiling data of ~100 phenolic compounds in ~200 Indian wheat varieties and ~100 Stevia rebaudiana during doctoral at BIRAC-NABI, India in collaboration with Central University of Punjab, India and postdoctoral project at CSIR-IHBT, India.
He identified regulatory QTLs/genes for starch quality trait in wheat, for SGs components in stevia rebaudiana and for blister blight disease tolerant in Tea using high throughput genotyping, metablomics and genome wide association mapping. Development and characterization of the food (chapati) made from Non-transgenic improved wheat lines having low GI and its preventive potential against metabolic disease assessment is the major contribution of his research.
His efforts have been made to improve wheat varieties so that it would be beneficial for humankind’s health and have preventive potential to reduce the risk of high fat induced metabolic diseases. The improved wheat varieties have considerable potential for food industry sectors due to high nutritional value i.e. “Rich in Amylose, Resistant Starch and low glycemic value”. His research efforts are acknowledged by various national and international scientific communities.
His Ongoing Research Efforts
Next-generation genetic improvement of medicinal plant Stevia rebaudiana for low-calorie sugar steviol glycoside biosynthesis
Transcriptome integrated QTLs mapping identified major Blister blight QTLs located on tea chromosomes
