Dr. Bishnupada Mandal is currently a full Professor (from April 2014) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Guwahati. He has over 18 years of teaching and research experience in IIT Guwahati. He has received B.Sc. in Chemistry (Honours) and B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from University of Calcutta, Kolkata, M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Ph.D. in Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. He was Visiting Research Professor in The Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at The Ohio State Engineering, Columbus, Ohio, USA during May-July 2017. He has served as Head of the Department, Chem. Eng., IIT Guwahati, Vice Chairman, IIT-JEE 2011 as well as Chairman, IIT-JEE 2012 for IIT Guwahati. He had been a recipient of the prestigious BOYSCAST fellow award of Department of Science and Technology (DST) Govt. of India and spent one year (2006-2007) as a visiting scientist at the Ohio State University, Columbus, USA. He has received Herdillia Award for excellence in Basic Research in Chemical Engineering/Technology by IIChE in 2020. He has also received Dr. A. V. Rama Rao's Fondation "Best PhD Thesis and Research Award" in Chemical Engineering/Technology as a PhD Supervisor by IIChE in 2020.
His research interest includes CO2 capture by absorption, adsorption, and membrane based processes from flue gas, natural gas and syngas; wastewater treatment using bio-sorption and enzymatic processes. He has guided 12 PhDs and 22 MTech and 24 BTech students. Currently he is involved in guidance of 10 PhD students. He has published two monographs (Lap-Lambert Academic Publishing, Germany, 2010), five book chapters, 77 research papers in reputed international journals and more than 150 papers in conferences. He has over 3442 citations and the h-index is 29. He has delivered plenary lectures at several national and international conferences.
Currently, he has served as a Member of the Board of Governor (BOG) (Senate Nominee), IIT Guwahati. He has served as the Editorial Board Member of Heliyon (Elsevier). He has served as reviewer of more than 40 ACS, Elsevier and RSC journals. He is a life fellow of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) and Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE). He is a fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry. He is also a member of American Chemical Society (ACS), North American Membrane Society (NAMS) and The Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE). He was the Organizing Secretary of 68th Annual Session of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (CHEMCON 2015). He has served as Honorary Regional Secretary and Chairman, Guwahati Regional Centre (GRC) of IIChE. He served as elected Executive National Council Member of IIChE for the years 2016-2019. He is involved in several research/consultancy projects. He has served Oil India Limited (OIL), Duliajan, National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPCL), New Delhi, GAIL (India) Limited and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bangalore as a consultant.
