Prof. Poonam Sharma is presently working as Professor in Department of Zoology, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh. Her research area includes infection biology, molecular reproductive toxicology and natural therapeutics. Over the course of her academic career, she has successfully completed several extramural research projects funded by DST-SEED, DST-NRDMS, DBT, CSIR, MOTA, UGC, MPCST etc. She has published 77 research papers in reputed journals and presented her research in 46 conferences which includes lectures in Germany, Austria, Sweden and United States of America. She has supervised the research work of 08 Ph.D., 20 M.Phil. and 60 M.Sc. students, significantly contributing to human resource development in the field of life sciences.
Prof. Sharma is deeply committed to her social responsibilities and is actively engaged in research addressing the health challenges of tribal populations in District Anuppur, an underdeveloped region with inadequate health infrastructure. Tribal women, in particular, face a heavy burden of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to poor hygiene and limited access to healthcare. Her ongoing research is centered on the infection biology and antimicrobial resistance of STIs, with a focus on pathogens such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma, and Mycoplasma spp. Using advanced molecular and microbiological approaches including real-time PCR, next-generation sequencing, and antimicrobial susceptibility profiling, she is investigating resistance mechanisms, therapeutic challenges, and their clinical implications. She is particularly interested in understanding how these infections trigger inflammation, oxidative stress, and epigenetic modifications, leading to reproductive toxicity, infertility, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
In parallel, Prof. Sharma is exploring natural bioactive compounds and novel therapeutic strategies to combat multidrug resistant STI pathogens. Her ultimate goal is to enhance diagnostics, develop effective treatment options, and improve reproductive health outcomes, particularly for marginalized tribal communities. Through her research, mentorship, and social commitment, Prof. Poonam Sharma has emerged as a distinguished academic and scientist, integrating molecular biology with community health to address critical biomedical and societal challenges. She has also been recognized in the “Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientist List 2024.”
