Prof (Dr) Shyam Singh Chandel (S.S.Chandel) has expertise in Renewable Energy Technology (Solar, Wind, Biomass) Research and Development with more than 40 years of rich scientific, R&D, Industrial and administrative experience in establishing institutions/centers for the government and industrial organizations, leading, formulating, coordinating national and international energy projects, programs, collaboration with national and international scientific institutions, agencies. Research contribution with 80 research publications in SCI & scopus indexed journals and reviewer of reputed International Energy Engineering & Technology Research Journals published by Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor and Francis, Springer, American Institute of Physics, etc. Currently working as Professor of Energy Technology & Dean, Engineering & Technology at Shoolini University, Solan ,Himachal Pradesh,India .Earlier worked as founder Head of the Centre for Energy & Environmental Engineering , National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh,India
Current areas of research are technology development, solar photovoltaic power generation and solar wind hybrid systems, solar passive building technology and Solar and Wind Resource assessment, with focus on Western Himalayan region.
Catalysed establishment of Solar Cities at Shimla & Hamirpur and Energy Park at NIT-Hamirpur , Appropriate Technology Centre and National Research and Technology Consortium, Intellectual Property Rights Centre in the State of Himachal Pradesh, India .
With more than 40 years Scientific, Technical and administrative Experience of working with State Govt. Institutions, HP Govt. and Govt. of India Ministries of New & Renewable Energy Sources, Science & Technology and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
Co-ordinated a number of International ,Aus-Aid , World Bank , and National Projects ; Co-ordinated the Solar House Action for Himachal Pradesh Govt. and provided R&D and Technology backup for the Solar Passive building Programme in HP resulting in the construction of more than 200 solar passive buildings.
Formulated Policy for making Solar Passive housing technology mandatory in Himachal Pradesh making HP as the first state in the country to take such a decision. Formulated the policy for the incorporation of Solar Passive building features in building Bye-laws in HP which were notified by HP Govt. in 2009.
Carried out Thermal performance evaluation and simulation studies of the constructed solar buildings under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, GOI. Provided technology inputs in Solar Passive heating to other hill states of India ;prepared manuals for Engineers, Architects & Masons for the design and construction of energy efficient buildings incorporating solar passive heating, cooling, earthquake resistant and rain water harvesting features for the Govt. of Himachal Pradesh. Under the World Bank funded Project provided solar passive design of 40 primary schools
As a Co-ordinator of HP Patent Information Centre, formulated a Policy for the Registration of Geographical Indications (GI) of Himachal Pradesh in 2004 under which a number of traditional products of HP namely Kullu Shawl, Kangra Tea,Chamba Rumal, Kinnauri Shawl have been registered thus protecting the rights of rural artisans thus benefitting weavers, artisans, traders & producers of the state. Catalyzed establishment of Intellectual Property Rights [IPR] Cells in State Universities and Institutions; provided trading in IPR to Scientists and innovators to file Patents and other IPRs w e f 1998-2009.
Currently working on performance evaluation and degradation studies of PV technologies under field conditions, solar radiation data prediction using ANN techniques, Solar photovoltaic power generation and solar wind hybrid systems, solar passive building technology and Solar and Wind Resource assessment with focus on Western Himalayan region.
PV system testing facilities at NIT Hamirpur to evaluate the performance of different PV technologies in cold climatic conditions of western Himalayan region.
