Dr. Somdatta Mukherjee

About
Dr. Somdatta Mukherjee did her PhD on yoga and religion from Université Paris Cité, France. Dr. Mukherjee was a research assistant in the department of Sociology at Boston University. She completed her MA in Sociology from University of Calcutta, MSc in Disaster Mitigation from Sikkim Manipal University of Health Medical and Technological Sciences, MPhil in Sociology from Jadavpur University, India.
She has been invited as a speaker in different international conferences/ workshops in Europe, South America, Asia and Oceania. She has the research experience of working in different places and with diverse groups like: the Indian Army (the research is the first of its kind), a famous food vlogger in West Bengal, the two major correctional homes in Kolkata (which is the first of its kind), the largest prostitute area of Kolkata, one of the biggest slums in Kolkata, old age homes, tea-gardens, tribal areas, child disability rights centres to name a few. She has expertise on Sociology of health-illness and medicine, bodies and emotions, yoga, ethnography. She is the first ethnologist on yoga in France. At present Dr. Mukherjee is the secretary of Research Committee-54 (RC-54, 2023-2027) of International Sociological Association (ISA). She is also serving as the editorial board member and reviewer of academic publications. Dr. Mukherjee has more than eight years of teaching experience in universities in India. She always tries to break the traditional chalk-and-talk concept of classroom and facilitate students with manifold manifestations of teaching learning process. At present she is working as a Senior Assistant Professor at ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education, India. Her present projects are on bodies and emotions in – Indian Army, tantra & sacrifice, belief, food-influencer-social media. She is trained in prāṇāyāma (the breathing techniques) and Odissi (Indian Classical dance). Apart from academic engagements she loves nature and photography.
