Dr. M. V. Rajam is a retired Professor and UGC BSR Faculty Fellow in the Department of Genetics, University of Delhi South Campus after his superannuation in February 2020, and has over 35 years of teaching and 42 years research experience.
Prof. Rajam received his M. Sc (1979) and Ph. D (1983) degree from Kakatiya University, Warangal, Telangana, and had a postdoctoral research experience at Yale University, New Heaven, and Boyce Thompson Institute, Cornell University, Ithaca, USA (1984-1985). He has made significant contributions in the fields of plant biotechnology, polyamine physiology and molecular biology, and RNA interference and artificial microRNA technology, and published over 175 publications, including book chapters/reviews. He is a Co-editor of a two volume two books on “Plant Biology and Biotechnology”, and “Genetically Modified Plants: Current Status, Prospects and Challenges”, published by Springer in 2015 and 2020 respectively. He has guided 39 PhD and 11 MPhil students and 27 postdoctoral fellows, and handled 30 major research projects. He made several short visits to various countries, including France, Italy, The Netherlands, China, Indonesia and Malaysia under the collaborative projects (supported by EU and Indo-French) and for attending the international conferences. He is a Fellow of four prestigious Academies, The Indian National Science Academy (New Delhi), National Academy of Sciences, India (Allahabad), Indian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (New Delhi) and Telangana State Academy of Sciences (Hyderabad), and member of several learned scientific societies, including ‘Plant Tissue Culture Association of India.
Prof. Rajam served/serves as a member of editorial board of some important journals of international repute, and a reviewer for many international journals. He served as the Head, Department of Genetics, University of Delhi South Campus, New Delhi, September 2012 – September 2015. He was also a member of the Task Force Committee on RNAi Technology of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, New Delhi. He served/serving as a member of the Academic/Research Advisory/Advisory Board, IBSC or other Committees of some Universities/Institutions, including the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi. He delivered ‘Steward Memorial Lecture’, PTCA (I) during 37th Annual Meeting of PTCA (I), Mangalore, 2015, and Prof. H. C. Arya Memorial Lecture and received Gold Medal during PTCA(I) meeting held at IIT, Guhawati, 2019. He has also received several honours and awards, including the Rockefeller Foundation Biotech Carrier Fellowship and ‘Shiksha Rattan Puraskar’ by the India International Friendship Society, Delhi 2011.
