About
Dr. Rahul Kumar is a Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering researcher specializing in solid-state joining and advanced manufacturing, with a primary focus on friction stir welding (FSW) and friction stir processing (FSP). He earned his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, where his research addressed material flow behavior, microstructural evolution, and mechanical performance of lightweight alloys.
His work integrates experimental process design with microstructural characterization to establish robust process–structure–property relationships. He has hands-on experience with advanced characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mechanical testing for performance evaluation of welded joints. His research has contributed to peer-reviewed international publications, particularly in the domain of aluminum alloys and process optimization in solid-state joining.
Dr. Kumar’s research interests include friction stir welding/processing, welding metallurgy, thermo-mechanical processing, microstructure engineering, and defect analysis in metallic systems. He is particularly interested in extending his work toward emerging areas such as dissimilar material joining, hybrid manufacturing processes, and data-driven/process modeling approaches in welding.
In addition to research, he has academic experience teaching core subjects such as Materials Science, Mechanical Metallurgy, Manufacturing Processes, Thermodynamics, and Heat Transfer, with an emphasis on integrating computational and experimental insights into engineering education.
He is actively seeking postdoctoral research opportunities in Europe and South Korea, with a focus on collaborative, high-impact research in advanced materials processing, joining technologies, and sustainable manufacturing.
