About
The area of my research work broadly focuses on the combination of concepts and processes such a genetic resistance, pathogenic variability, host-pathogen interaction, molecular diagnostics, biological control, epidemiology and management of plant biotic stresses. My approach has been to study these processes in order to develop more effective, broad-spectrum and durable disease management strategies, in addition to reducing crop losses and sustainable crop production. In studying these processes, I have characterized 263 accessions representing a cross section of recently developed common wheat genotypes in India that showed leaf tip necrosis (LTN)-associated pleiotropic adult plant resistance (PAPR) genes. I have developed an efficient, rapid and sensitive LAMP based diagnostic assay and a quick and reliable PCR-based detection assay to rapidly identify, detect and monitor wheat stripe rust and leaf rust, respectively. I worked on the characterization of rust resistance at seedling and adult plant stage, I identified several stripe rust resistance genes (YrA, Yr2, Yr9, Yr18 and Yr27) and leaf rust resistance genes (Lr1, Lr3, Lr10, Lr13, Lr19, Lr23, Lr26 and Lr34) through gene postulation and molecular markers analysis. I have also identified several promising slow rusting adult plant resistance (APR) genotypes from exotic and indigenous wheat sources, which can be used in breeding strategies to develop consistent and durable rusts resistant wheat varieties in the country. Through inter-institutional collaboration, I have initiated work on artificial intelligence and deep learning approaches for early detection of wheat diseases (rusts) and prediction of crop losses. For the larger interest of the scientific fraternity and stakeholders, I am always interested in processes that encourage us to collaborate to work on these processes and represent our position in the scientific world.
