I am an Indian Infectious Diseases physician, currently working as an Associate Professor at AIIMS Kalyani. Previously, I have worked as a Senior Consultant of Infectious Diseases at Beleghata ID & BG Hospital, Kolkata, where I was involved in the direct care and management of severe COVID-19 pneumonia/ARDS patients, as Director of Clinical Research at 1Day Sooner and as a Technical Officer for Antimicrobial Resistance with an additional charge of Rapid Research and Innovations Cell for COVID-19 in the WHO South East Asia Regional Office and as a Consultant for AMR in WHO SEARO and a Consultant for Infectious Diseases in the Indian Council of Medical Research.
I reported the first cases of Nipah virus from West Bengal in January 2026, and served as the member of the National Outbreak Response Team for high biosecurity viral disease outbreaks of Nipahvirus in West Bengal in January-February 2026 and H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreak in Sikkim in February-March 2026.
I am trained as a physician from the Medical College, Kolkata. After completing my training and foundation (internship), in 2008, I joined the Internal Medicine department of the same institute as a Resident Physician.
In 2010, I joined Maulana Azad Medical College under the University of Delhi for postgraduate training (MD) in Clinical Microbiology. Here, I learned the diagnostic and research aspects of infectious diseases. I had exposure in bacteriology, antibiotics laboratory, phage typing, parasitology, mycobacteriology including modern molecular techniques for MTB and nontubercular mycobacteria, mycology, and virology including HIV.
My MD dissertation was on hospital-acquired Urinary Tract Infection, in which I worked on phenotypic and genotypic determination of antimicrobial resistance among hospital-acquired bacterial isolates.
After completion of my MD in 2013, I worked as a Senior Resident Clinical Microbiologist in Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi, and later, ESI-PGIMSR & ESIC Medical College, Kolkata between 2013 to 2014. Later I joined the same institute as an Assistant Professor.
My principal role was to establish a state-of-the-art clinical microbiology service with both conventional and molecular facilities and provide consultations to other clinical departments in issues of antibiotic choices, stewardship, hospital infection control, and Biomedical waste management. A major part of the job was also the teaching and evaluation of undergraduate (MBBS) students. I have been a University examiner for MBBS with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.
In July, 2016, I joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in a training (fellowship) position for pursuing a postdoctoral (DM) course in Infectious Diseases, through a highly competitive national level entrance examination. This course was the first of its kind, in the whole country, and mine was the second batch with three other co-fellows.
As a trainee, I have undergone different rotational postings with different responsibilities including independent or supervised patient care, reporting to the consultants, teaching UG medical students and PG residents, designing and implementing antimicrobial stewardship, administering and treating patients with outpatient appointments and indoor admissions, taking active part in academic activities including Journal clubs, seminars, small group teachings and arranging agenda specific academic conferences, etc.
During this time, I have performed two key research projects, both of which addressed key issues on antimicrobial resistance. One was a case-control study on the carriage of colistin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, with special emphasis on the newly described plasmid mediated (mcr) mechanism of colistin resistance.
The other was the conceptualization, and implementation of the first Antimicrobial Stewardship program (ASP) in the Medicine department of the institute, which led to a significant decrease in redundant usage of antibiotics, and improvement in the practice of sending cultures.
I have obtained a second postgraduate qualification (DNB) in Medical Microbiology from the National Board of Examination, India in 2014 and have obtained the Diplomate of the Royal College of Pathology (UK) in Medical Microbiology and Virology. I have also obtained the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Public Health (UK) in January 2020.
I have published 40+ peer-reviewed journal articles to date on various topics including dangerous pathogen infections eg. COVID-19, Nipah virus, resistant bacterial infections, mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, novel and rare bacterial infections, hospital-acquired infections, Hepatitis C, and other aspects of Infectious Diseases.
