Dr Om Prakash Chaurasia, Scientist G, joined Defence Institute of High Altitude Research oined DIHAR (DRDO), Leh as Research Associate in 1993, Scientist in 1998 and is presently serving as Director. As an ethnobotanist par excellence he has extensively surveyed flora of trans-Himalaya regions of Ladakh and Lahaul-Spiti with emphasis on medicinal plants of Defence importance. He has pioneered research on High altitude agriculture technologies and protected cultivation that have largely contributed towards food security of soldiers & society in strategic Ladakh sector. He has developed several herbal products viz., Seabuckthorn beverage, Seabuckthorn herbal tea, Seapricot beverage, Seabuckthorn soft gel capsules, Herbal Antioxidant Supplement, Herbal Adaptogenic Performance Enhancer, Anti Blemishes Cream etc., from indigenous trans-Himalayan medicinal plants, especially Seabuckthorn, with targeted health benefits for troops deployed in high altitude regions. He has 12 patents for which technologies have been commercialized and has published more than 150 research papers in various national & international journals and authored books on Cold Desert Plants in 05 volumes and Ethnobotany & Plants of trans-Himalaya. He is Life member of 10 scientific societies and Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Fellow of National Academy of Biological Sciences, Fellow of National Environment Science Academy, Fellow of Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources, Fellow of Society of Ethnonobotanists. Dr OP Chaurasia has several awards to his credit, recently has been awarded with First State (Ladakh UT) Public Service (Gazetted Category) Award-2021 by Administration of Ladakh UT on the Republic Day-21.
