Currently I am Reader in Work and Organisation Studies at the University of Essex, UK. Previously I was a Professor of International Sociology at the Manchester Metropolitan University and at the University of Greenwich. I am originally from India, spending school life and early part of higher education in South India. I obtained my PhD in Sociology from the University of Manchester, pursuing research in sociology of work, gender and intersectional inequalities, and actively publishing in many academic journals, book and blogs. I have many years of experience of working with many Universities in the UK.
My research interests have a strong international and comparative dimension with expertise on emerging economies such as India and Africa in the nexus of their global work, neoliberal regimes, organisations and labour markets, migration, digital technology and global value chains with a focus on social justice and wellbeing. My recently completed collaborative projects examine migration and integration policies in educational settings using co-creation and participatory approaches across the UK and the EU; gendered and racialised nexus of education-work transition in South Africa; gender capital approaches to digital inclusion in the labour market and entrepreneurship in India. I am now leading a recently awarded a UKRI funded project exploring autonomy in the garment sector workplaces of Leicester and Dhaka, focussing on strengthening anti-slavery legislations for enhancing worker representation, workplace control and autonomy in workers’ organisations.
My latest (co) edited volume, Global Migration and Diversity of Educational Experiences in the Global South and North, published by Routledge focusses on decolonising migration studies and educational experiences. My previous book, Development and Gender Capital in India: Change, Continuity and Conflict in Kerala (Routledge, 2017) examines gendered issues in the economy and society of the Indian state of Kerala. As a social activist, I regularly contribute to media analysis on social issues. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and member of the British Sociological Association, the Development Studies Association and the Global Studies Association, UK.
I was the UK Lead on the the Horizon 2020 Project (2019-22) on MICREATE- Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe, (www.micreate.eu) which looks at experiences of migrant children in over 10 countries across Europe.
