Dr Premkumar has worked in the Department of Hepatology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh as Assistant Professor for over 7 years. She completed her MBBS training at the Lady Hardinge Medical College and post graduate MD Medicine training at Maulana Azad Medical College in Delhi University during which she has won several academic medals. She completed her DM Hepatology at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi in 2016 and joined PGIMER in 2017 as Assistant Professor. She is currently the faculty in charge of the Liver Critical Care Unit in the Department of Hepatology, PGIMER at Chandigarh, India. She has special interest in liver disease including viral hepatitis, alcohol related liver disease, fatty liver disease, cirrhotic cardiomyopathy, critical care and liver failure. She has extensive experience in Liver Transplantation. She has ongoing research trials in anemia and coagulation, critical care and cardiomyopathy, and public health management of viral hepatitis.
She is part of a team under India’s National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme and has been involved with training primary care physicians and practitioners about the management of viral hepatitis in the ECHO sessions of the Punjab Model for Elimination of Viral Hepatitis. She was awarded the honorific ‘Hepatitis Elimination Champion’ on World Hepatitis Day 2019 by the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination.
Dr Premkumar is the Deputy Editor for the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology (ISSN: 0973-6883), Official Journal of the Indian Association for Study of the Liver. She is the Managing Editor of the Hepatology section of the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, and an Associate Editor of the JGHOpen since 2023.
