Fields of research expertise and Interest:
Dr. Udupa’s research & development contributions are in the areas of Optical design & Instrumentation, Optical Interferometry, Thin film optics and Photonics.
Dr. Udupa’s research in optical interferometry resulted in several novel techniques in optical component testing and metrology. They include measurement of radius of curvatures of cylindrical surfaces, laser beam collimation testing and thickness measurement of thick transparent films. One of his noteworthy contributions is the development of optical tomographic technique for radius of curvature measurements of deep spheres and aspheric optical characterization. He has developed a low-cost digital holographic microscope for 3D imaging of biological cells.
His research work in optical thin film science & technology include studies on B4C and W/B4C multilayers for X ray optics, TiO2, ZrO2 and HFO2 thin-film based optical devices as well as and metal-dielectric multilayer thin film devices. Dr. Udupa’s research in the area of Photonics include tunable properties of polymer based and moderately doped silicon based 1-Dimensional photonic crystals. His research includes hybrid Tamm plasmon-cavity modes for refractive index sensing and other studies on photonic bandgap quasicrystals.
Dr. Udupa has designed and developed several spectroscopic instruments such as Czerny-Turner monochromators, 22-channel polychromator and 0.25m echelle spectrograph for customized analytical applications; 6.65-meter Vacuum ultraviolet scanning spectrometer for molecular spectroscopy at Indus-1 synchrotron. He worked on optical design of a 6-meter optical periscope for visual inspection in nuclear Fast Breeder Test Reactor core and a 10-meter optical periscope for the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. He has developed customized radiation hard periscopes for visual inspection in reactor Hot cells. He has developed a laser spectroscopy based heavy water in air detection system for reactor applications.
