About
Professor Dedee Murrell was educated in the United Kingdom at the Universities of Cambridge (medical sciences) and Oxford (clinical medicine). After basic medical training in the UK (John Radcliffe, Addenbrooke's hospitals) she was fortunate to be accepted into a research fellowship at Duke University division of dermatology and the prestigious dermatology residency program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, well known for its expertise in blistering diseases and research. She was recruited to the faculty of New York University's Department of Dermatology, supported by a Howard Hughes post doctoral research award, as an Assistant Professor. Subsequently she obtained a K11 Physician Scientist grant from the NIH and moved to Rockefeller University as a Clinical Scholar in the Laboratory for Investigative Dermatology. In 1996 she commenced at the University of NSW, Sydney, and St George Hospital Dept of Dermatology, where she became Chair of Dermatology in 2004 and Professor in 2008. She established new adult and paediatric dermatology clinics, a clinical trials unit, research lab, and the national diagnostic lab for Epidermolysis Bullosa, Her doctorate (MD by Research, UNSW, 2006) was based on her research in blistering diseases. She has been recognised for her expertise is in medical dermatology and therapeutics, with interests in blistering diseases, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne and medical treatments for skin cancer. She has established and validated a number of new outcome measures for blistering diseases including QOLEB and EBDASI for EB, ABQOL and TABQOL for AIBD. As Co- leader of the International Blistering Diseases Consensus Group she has developed and validated the PDAI for pemphigus and BPDAI for bullous pemphigoid and MMPDAI. These are in use in clinical trials for these diseases. She edited a multiauthor textbook, "Blistering diseases", coedited Lebwohl's "Treatment of Skin Disease" 6th edition and co-authored 4 chapters for Uptodate on blistering diseases. In 2022, she received the DSc degree from Oxford University based on her research developing validated new outcome measures in blistering diseases. She is or was on the boards of several international dermatology societies (International Society of Dermatology (Exec VP, Chair of Communications), Women's Derm Society, Intl Soc for Pediatric Dermatology) and was President of the Australasian Society for Dermatological Research. She serves on the editorial boards of several journals including the British Journal of Dermatology (previous associate editor), Journal of Investigative Dermatology (Communications), Intl J Dermatology (previous section editor),JAAD, JEADV, JAMA Dermatology, Acta Derm Venereol, she was founding co-editor of the International Journal of Women's Dermatology for 8 years. She is the author of 460 peer reviewed papers with H index 71 and over 21,000 citations. She lectures regularly at meetings around the world. She is the recipient of multiple awards, most recently the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Medical Dermatology Society (2024) in the USA.
