RESEARCH EXPERTISE
My research aims to identify a novel target and the underlying molecular mechanisms that control metabolic rate, oxygen consumption, and insulin sensitivity not only in skeletal muscle but also in cardiac muscle and in adipose tissue normally as well as during sports/exercise. PGC-1a is implicated in the activation of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis, as well as the upregulation of GLUT4 expression in muscle cells. The mitochondrial respiratory chain is the means by which ATP is generated within mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses. The conversion of NAD+ and FAD to NADH and FAD begins with acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA), which can be made from fatty acids, amino acids, or the oxidation of pyruvate. The creation of cellular energy depends on the proper functioning of this cycle. Transporting electrons from NADH and FADH to the ETC complexes aids in proton transport across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which in turn fuels ATP synthesis.
