About
Xin Li is a Professor at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He is an AGU Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, and a Fellow of the Geographical Society of China. He received his B.S. in GIS and Cartography from Nanjing University in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Remote Sensing and GIS from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998.
His research focuses on the integrated observation–data–model paradigm in geographical science, using remote sensing and data assimilation as core approaches and watersheds in cold and arid regions as key research units. He designed and led the Heihe remote sensing experiments, advancing scaling and validation methods in quantitative remote sensing and promoting deep integration between remote sensing and eco-hydrological research. He also pioneered new directions in land data assimilation by developing nonlinear filtering algorithms and representativeness error estimation methods, clarifying theory–data dual-driven principles for data assimilation, and establishing a high-resolution multi-source remote sensing land data assimilation system.
In parallel, he has played a leading role in building national and international open-science infrastructure. He established the Tibetan Plateau Earth system science big-data platform and led the development of a series of high-resolution, high-quality land surface data products that support research on the Tibetan Plateau, the cryosphere, hydrology, and global change.
His publications have been cited more than 38,000 times, with an h-index of 97, and he has been recognized as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in geosciences.
He has served in a number of major international and national leadership roles, including as a member of the Scientific Steering Group of the WCRP/GEWEX initiative, a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the Global Water Futures programme, Chair of the Information Geography Committee of the Geographical Society of China, and Chair of the Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Committee of the Chinese Society of Cryospheric Science. He also serves on the editorial boards of Science Bulletin and Science China Earth Sciences, is Editor-in-Chief of Information Geography, and Associate Editor of Journal of Remote Sensing and Geographical Science.
