Dr. Amit Kumar Dey is a biochemist and proteomics scientist specializing in mass spectrometry–based proteomics, aging biology, cellular senescence, biomarker discovery, and translational biomedical research. He currently serves as a Biochemist at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, where he leads and collaborates on multidisciplinary research programs focused on aging, age-related diseases, senescence-associated biomarkers, proteostasis, and multi-omics approaches for understanding biological aging.
Dr. Dey has more than 18 years of experience spanning academic research, clinical diagnostics, and the biopharmaceutical industry. His scientific career integrates advanced analytical technologies with translational applications, enabling the discovery and validation of biomarkers relevant to human health, disease, and aging. His expertise encompasses liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), quantitative proteomics, protein characterization, post-translational modification analysis, protein-protein interactions, targeted and discovery-based proteomics, and computational data analysis.
At NIA-NIH, Dr. Dey develops and applies advanced proteomic workflows using Orbitrap mass spectrometry platforms, nanoparticle-based enrichment technologies, automated sample preparation systems, and data-independent acquisition (DIA) strategies to investigate circulating biomarkers of aging and senescence. His work contributes to large-scale aging studies and collaborative initiatives aimed at identifying molecular signatures associated with health span, frailty, chronic diseases, and therapeutic interventions. He serves as Co-Investigator, Key Personnel, or Collaborator on multiple federally funded and foundation-supported projects, including programs supported by the National Institute on Aging, the Hevolution Foundation, the Impetus Longevity Grant initiative, and the SenNet Consortium.
Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Dey worked as Associate Scientific Manager in the Analytical Research and Development division of Biocon Biologics, where he contributed to the biochemical and mass spectrometric characterization of therapeutic proteins and biosimilars. His work supported product quality assessment, process development, and regulatory compliance through detailed analyses of protein structure, post-translational modifications, peptide mapping, and chromatographic variants.
Dr. Dey previously served as a Research Scientist at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, where he applied proteomic and post-translational modification profiling approaches to investigate infectious diseases, including malaria and tuberculosis.
He also completed extensive postdoctoral training at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), India, where he led translational proteomics studies within the Garbh-Ini pregnancy cohort. His research identified molecular signatures associated with maternal stress, pregnancy progression, and adverse birth outcomes using state-of-the-art quantitative proteomic approaches including SWATH-MS, iTRAQ, and targeted mass spectrometry.
Dr. Dey earned his PhD in Biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB-CSIR), India. His doctoral research focused on host-pathogen interactions in Vibrio cholerae, leading to the discovery that host-cell contact regulates bacterial virulence gene expression through modulation of intracellular signaling pathways. This work resulted in publications in the Journal of Bacteriology and Bio-protocol and contributed to a deeper understanding of cholera pathogenesis.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dey has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, including Nature Aging, Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Cell Death & Disease, Journal of Proteome Research, Scientific Reports, Stem Cells, Biology, and others. His research has addressed diverse biological questions ranging from aging and senescence to infectious diseases, cancer biology, pregnancy health, protein homeostasis, and cellular signaling mechanisms.
His recent contributions include studies characterizing the senescence-associated secretome, evaluating proteomic biomarkers of aging, advancing top-down proteomics approaches for proteoform characterization, and developing strategies for translating senotherapeutic interventions into clinical applications. He has also contributed to community efforts to standardize and improve methods for detecting senescent cells through participation in the SenNet Consortium and related collaborative initiatives.
