About
Dr. Peralam Yegneswaran Prakash, Ph.D., is currently working as Faculty of Health Sciences, Associate Professor of Microbiology and In-charge, Medical Mycology Laboratory, Department of Microbiology, Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). The laboratory caters to the diagnostic mycology needs of Kasturba Hospital (KH), an apex teaching hospital attached to KMC, Manipal and associate hospital of MAHE. The KH is one of the largest private healthcare centres in India with 2032 beds, average of 3,000 outpatients and 200 admissions each day, catering to patients across India and Internationally. The laboratory is NABL accredited and partakes in WHO-PGIMER External Quality Assurance program.
As an educator, he is involved with Pedagogy and Curriculum development at MAHE institutions for Postgraduate, Undergraduate and Certificate level courses in Microbiology programs at; KMC (Medicine - MBBS, M.Sc., M.D.), MSLS (Life Sciences - B.Sc. Biotechnology), WGSHA (Food Sciences – BHM, BA Culinary Arts, M.Sc. Dietetics), MCODS (Dentistry – BDS, MDS), MCONS (Nursing - B.Sc, PC B.Sc.), MCHP (Biosafety, Lab Quality). He supervised as Guide and Co-Guide several undergraduate (ICMR-STS, KVYP, SPiCE) and postgraduate (M. Sc., M.tech, MD) dissertations and projects. He is a recognized Ph.D. Guide at MAHE, Microbiology Subject Expert - Doctoral Advisory Committees and Ph.D. Examiner for various universities.
With key focus and research interests in medical mycology, he has published and presented scientific papers at educational meetings/conferences held in USA, Japan, Finland, Thailand, Rome, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia and prestigious national forums in India on Medical Mycology. He has received extramural research grants from National, International and Corporate funding bodies (ICMR, GOK, SERB, DST, ). He had been invited in 2008 as a Guest Researcher at the CDC, Mycotic Diseases Branch, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He is currently involved with various National and International interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborative projects in Mycology. He has been a Founder Member & Young ISHAM representative for India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh from 2012 and founding member, Physician & Scientists of Mycoses Study Group Education & Research Consortium. He is an active contributing member of professional associations; Society of Indian Human Animal Mycology, Asia Pacific Society of Medical Mycology, International Society for Human and Animal Mycology, Mycology Society of India, Asian Mycological Association, International Mycological Association, American Society for Microbiology and Pan African Medical Mycology Society.
He is an Organizer and Resource Faculty for National and International wet lab workshops on 'Techniques in Diagnostic Mycology' training Junior faculty members, postgraduate residents and research scholars. He was the Resource person, Induction Training Program for Lab technicians appointed to VCTC, PPTCT and ICTC Centers of Karnataka State on Common techniques for the laboratory diagnosis of opportunistic fungal infections in HIV/AIDS patients. He has to his credit over 80 peer-reviewed publications indexed in Web of Sciences, authored four mycology book chapters and secured patent in fungal Point of Care diagnostics. He is a Jury member for Science Projects in College Education (SPiCE / ( SSP-UG ) grants VGST, DST Program.
Dr Prakash is currently a Faculty Member at Department of Medical Education, KMC, Manipal and Faculty Mentor at FAIMER - M-IILIPE. He is a Steering Committee Member – KMC Manipal, Unit of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics. He is a National Faculty & Expert Subject Consultant Microbiology for 3T (Train-Teach-Transfer) series for Medical UG & PG training programs in Asia towards implementation of vertically integrated UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Haifa Integrated Bioethics Curriculum. He is member of International Forum of Teachers of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics.
