Prof. Amita Jain, MD, PhD, Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, the National Academy of Medical Sciences and Infectious Diseases Society of America is currently Head of the Department of Microbiology KGMU, Lucknow.
She established the Intermediate Reference Lab for TB in the state of Uttar Pradesh, of which she is currently In-Charge; securing funding from the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP) Govt. of India, FIND (Foundation for Innovative and Newer Diagnostics) and USAID. she is also In-Charge of the State-level Virology Lab; Nodal Officer for laboratory technical support, Covid testing, UP and In-charge Covid testing lab KGMU. She had established this facility as well-- a first of its kind facility providing viral diagnosis to more than 20,000 patients per year and providing laboratory diagnosis of viral outbreaks in state of Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states.
Prof. Jain is a Member of the National Tuberculosis Expert Group and the Subject Expert Committee on Antimicrobials of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India. She chairs the IBSC at KGMU and was, till recently, Faculty In-charge of KGMU’s Centre for Advanced Research.
She has served as Chair of the State Operational Research, UP for the RNTCP, as a Member of the Research Committee of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science, and RML Institute of Medical Sciences Lucknow, a Founder Member and a former President of the UP Chapter of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists, among other responsibilities.
She is currently working on different projects, funded by ICMR, DHR, BMGF, National Health Mission (NHM), FIND and EcoHealth. These range from ‘biosurveillance of Henipaviruses and Filoviruses’, to ‘neuronal autoantibodies in acute viral encephalitis in children’, to ‘determining the role of RNAi in Dengue Virus replication’ and of course, tuberculosis. As a part of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network, she has secured extensive funding from USAID for a number of international multicentre clinical studies including clinical trials.
Prof. Amita Jain is designated as the “Lead Faculty of Virology for Web Med Central” apart from serving on the Editorial Board of seven professional and academic journals. She has edited two books published by Elsevier, contributed 5 book chapters 35 reviews on diagnosis and management of infectious diseases like Leishmaniasis, TB, dengue, influenza virus, rotavirus, Zika, JEV, etc. She has co-authored 297 papers on molecular, immunological, biochemical and imaging techniques for diagnosis and prognosis of infectious diseases, host-pathogen interactions and disease biology and 9 Case Reports in national and international journals. She has contributed 1,346 unique nucleotide sequences relating to viruses, bacteria, fungi; including 266 from other taxa. She holds 3 PCT patents for viral diagnostic kits and has filed 5 other patent applications.
She is a much loved as a teacher and research mentor and has been recognized by the KGMU with a “Best Teacher” award. She has mentored 31 PhD students and supervised hundreds of MS/ M.D/ MCH and DM theses. She has organized or co-organized a large number of seminars, conferences training and capacity-building programs and CME courses.
