About
Baljinder Singh Heera received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (Photonics) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, India. His doctoral research focused on dynamic resource allocation algorithms for Space Division Multiplexed Elastic Optical Networks (SDM-EONs), addressing challenges in high-capacity and flexible optical transport networks.
Following his Ph.D., he worked as a Principal Project Scientist at IIT Delhi, where he led the implementation of a hybrid coherent optical communication testbed. His research encompassed coherent optical transmission, simplified coherent detection, Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) systems, and the convergence of long-haul and access optical networks. He also served as a Senior Researcher at the University of Patras, Greece, contributing to the development of digital twin technologies for next-generation optical network architectures.
He later worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, contributing to India's flagship Advanced Optical Communication (AOC) project. His research focused on the development and experimental validation of a large-scale optical communication field testbed, including capacity scaling experiments over field-deployed multi-core fiber (MCF) links.
He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at University College Cork and the Tyndall National Institute, Ireland, where his research focuses Datacenter/AI optical interconnects, co-packaged optics, and energy-efficient high-speed optical communication systems.
His broader research interests include optical communication systems, optical networking, photonics integration, coherent and IMDD transmission, digital twins, network optimization, high-speed optical interconnects, and experimental validation of next-generation optical technologies.
