About

Vinayak Naik is an OPERA awardee Professor of CS, EEE, and APPCAIR at BITS Pilani, Goa. He headed the CS department from 2019-23. He is a member of the Research Advisory Council of D Y Patil International University, Akrudi, Pune.

He was an Associate Professor at IIIT Delhi, a Visiting Associate Professor at IIT Bombay, a Research Advisor to the CTO of TCS, a Member of Governing Council of NIDHI Technology Business Incubator (TBI) at Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar, an Advisor to McGraw-Hill Education, and a Chief Architect at Backpack Labs. He received his Ph.D. in CSE from Ohio State University, USA in 2006 and BTech from VJTI, Mumbai in 1999. He worked at IISc, UCLA, Telcordia, and TCS. He spent time at Microsoft Research and VMware R&D as a visiting researcher.

His area of research is large-scale networked systems, with the current emphasis on Mobile Computing, IoT, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. He has an interest in applying these to the domain of healthcare. He worked as a consultant for a project that used Android tablets for collecting data about women's health, nutrition, and sanitation in the state of Bihar during 2018. It was a joint project between University of Göttingen and IIT Gandhinagar. Since 2015, he has a DST-funded project to use Mobiles and Sensors to assist data collection of Sleep Apnea patients. For the project, he closely works with the faculty members in the Internal Medicine department of AIIMS, New Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh. In the past, he has helped Apollo Hospitals Educational and Research Foundation with their mHelath projects.

He received the Best Paper Award at WACI’18, Best Paper Runner-up Award at NetHealth’18, First Position at WiFi ThinkFest'17, Best Paper Award at WACI’17, Google IoT Research Award'16, Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award'16 for his work in using mobile and sensors for healthcare, Teaching Excellence Award by the BTech-MTech Graduating batches of IIIT-Delhi in 2015 and 2017, Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award'11, and CENS-UCLA Local Employee Award'07. His PhD students were awarded IBM Research PhD Fellowships two times, Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship, Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research, MobiSys’12 Google Best Presenter Award, and COMSNETS’18 Best Presenter Award.
