Prof. Chandra Sekhar Gahan is presently working as a Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at School of Studies of Interdisciplinary Education and Research, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya (A Central University), Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, India. Prior to his joining he was serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies, Siksha Bhavan (Institute of Science), Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal and as an Associate Professor as well as Assistant Professor at Central University of Rajasthan in the Department of Sports Bioscience and Department of Microbiology. Prof. Gahan has worked as academician in various central universities in India for more than 10 years in various capacities and was a founder Head of the department of Sports Bioscience and Founder Coordinator of the School of Sports Sciences. He has served as a Marie Curie Fellow as Experienced Researcher in Mining Engineering department of Suleyman Demirel University, Turkey. He has also served as Assistant Professor at SRM Research Institute, SRM University, Tamil Nadu. Prior to this he has also served a Senior Researcher at Mineral Resources division of Korea Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) South Korea . Prof. Gahan completed his Post doctoral research in the Chemical Engineering and Geosciences Department of Lulea Technological University, Sweden and Chemical Engineering department at University of Cape Town, South Africa. Prof. Gahan completed his Ph.D. Degree in Process Metallurgy from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Geosciences at Lulea University of Technology, Sweden. Prof. Gahan’s research work focuses on Biohydrometallurgical and Bioprocess engineering aspects of primary and secondary metal resources. Other areas of research include Waste recycling together with Material Characterization using biological/chemical methods of waste management. His Scientific production includes more than 38 research articles in International Peer-reviewed Journals and more than 70 conference proceedings, book chapters, consultancy reports and edited books. Most of the published articles are in the field of Hydrometallurgy and waste management. The high quality of several papers is witnessed by the relatively high impact factors of some of the Journals: Waste management, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Journal of Hazardous Minerals engineering, Hydrometallurgy, Korean Journal of Chemical engineering, Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, Canadian Metallurgy Quarterly, Bioresource Technology etc.. Based on publishing activity, his Scopus/Google scholar h-index 14, i-10 Index 18, and total citations 1168. He has also made a few collaborations with several journals as a member of the editorial board as well as a reviewer. He has also been a reviewer of 2 funding proposals and organizer of two recent international conferences in Canada and Dubai. His scientific activity occurred in Turkey, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, and India, with a significant level of international experience. In particular, he received a Marie Curie Fellowship to work in Turkey. Most of his research activity was in Hydrometallurgy and waste management using chemical and biological methods, with a particular focus on metal recovery and waste reduction in industrial processes. His international activity also allowed him to come across several languages like Swedish, Turkish, and Korean. His ability to attract research funds is confirmed by FP7 Marie Curie Project and Science and Engineering Research Board – Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India (SERB-DST) Young Scientist Project from European Union (EU) and India approved projects between 2009 and 2015. His teaching portfolio includes supervision of total 4 students out of which 2 Ph.D. Students were awarded in 2019 and 2 have submitted their PhD Thesis in July 2024 along with 36 M.Sc. and 2 B.Sc. students since 2005 and more than 40 courses taught in different Universities. He was also an examiner to several PhD students both in Indian and Foreign countries in Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering. He has written 6 technical reports on several consultancy projects done at Lulea University of Technology (LTU), Sweden for metal recovery; he had also participated in carrying out the Projects of EU BiOMine under the Supervision of Professor Ake Sandstrom, LTU Sweden, and also participated in preparing the deliverables as a coauthor. Finally, He is also a Co-inventor of a patent for coal desulfurization a process: South Korean Patent entitled “Method for Desulfurization of Fossil Fuels using Iron and Sulfur Oxidising Microorganism in Iron-free 9K Medium” December 2012.
