About

Professor Bhushan Patwardhan is a globally recognised biomedical scientist with over four decades of sustained contributions to transdisciplinary research, evidence-based traditional, complementary and integrative medicine, and higher education governance. He is the originator of foundational research frameworks — Ayurgenomics, Systems Ayurveda, Reverse Pharmacology, Network Pharmacology and Therapeutic Adjuvants — that have reshaped the interface of traditional medicine with modern science. Ranked among the world’s top 2% biomedical scientists (Stanford–Elsevier global ranking), he has 175+ peer-reviewed publications, an H-index of 64, and over 17,600 citations, making him the most cited author in evidence-based Ayurveda. His governance roles have shaped Indian higher education at the highest levels: as Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Chairman of NAAC, and Chairman (in charge) of ICSSR, he spearheaded landmark reforms including the National Education Policy 2020 initiatives — UGC-CARE, UGC STRIDE, the Academic Bank of Credit, and the UGC Quality Mandate. As Chair of the UGC-CARE Consortium for Academic Research Ethics, he led the creation of India’s first credible national whitelist of research journals; his widely cited Nature Worldview article on predatory publishing influenced policy across Indian academia. On the global stage, he serves as Member of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) on traditional medicine, Ayush India Lead for the WHO–Ministry of AYUSH Joint Taskforce on the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM), and Commissioner on the Lancet Citizens’ Commission on Reimagining India’s Health System. He has delivered invited lectures at the United Nations, World Health Organization, National Institutes of Health (USA), Harvard, MIT, Johns Hopkins, Purdue, and many other leading national and international platforms. Author of several acclaimed books — including Genome to Om: Evolving Journey of Modern Science to Meta-science and Integrative Approaches for Health (Academic Press, Elsevier) — and Founder Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (Elsevier), he holds 8 Indian and 2 US patents and has supervised 20 doctoral scholars.
