About

After completing my M.B.B.S and internship from V.S.S. Medical College, Odisha in 2005, I worked as a tutor in Community Medicine for a year. During my training, I identified infectious diseases as a particular area of interest, and joined Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai in 2008 for a M.D. in microbiology. After my M.D., I worked as a senior resident in microbiology at JIPMER, Puducherry, where I was mostly involved in diagnostics and teaching. It was becoming increasingly clear to me that a career largely in routine microbiology was not what I wanted to pursue. Hence, in 2012, I joined the Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory (WTRL) at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, a leading clinical and public health research laboratory which has been conducting studies on the epidemiology of diarrheal diseases for over 50 years and has an established reputation. In the WTRL, I was involved in projects evaluating mucosal immunity to poliovirus and potential reasons for poor uptake of oral poliovirus vaccines in developing countries. I completed my Ph.D. at CMC under the guidance of Dr. Gagandeep Kang. This was an outstanding learning experience and enabled me to acquire skills in a number of areas in public health research.

Subsequently, I joined the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Govt. of India, where my focus was on respiratory viral diseases. Initially, I supervised the activities of the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) network from the Department of Health Research, Govt. of India, New Delhi. During January to July 2020, I was part of the ICMR core research team on COVID-19 at ICMR Headquarters, New Delhi. In August 2020, I joined the ICMR- Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar. During 2020-2021, I was involved in the COVID-19 sero-surveys in Odisha, which was conducted among the general population and high-risk population. Currently, I supervise the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Tuberculosis at RMRC, Bhubaneswar. As part of the NRL, I and my team supervise the TB diagnostic activities under the National TB Elimination Program (NTEP) in 10 states (Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, and 7 states in the north-east).
