BRIEF ACHIEVEMENT OF RESEARCH WORK DONE

1. Identified Insect Resistance Jute Germplasm: First time, the wild jute species, Corchorusaestuans(Accession, WCIN 179) identifiedas a potential source for resistance to the jute hairy caterpillar, Spilosomaobliqua.This resistanceis confirmed based on antibiosis and antixenosis mechanism of host plant resistance (HPR). Hence, C. aestuanswill have a wide scope for further usage in insect resistance breeding program as it is crossable with the cultivated species/ varieties.Knowing its importance, this germplasm has been registered in the ICAR-NBPGR gene bank by the Germplasm Registration Committee of ICAR.

2. Associated in developing of two new Varieties: Associated in the development of two new varieties of Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.).Myself being an entomologist assisted the plant breeders in developing these varieties by recording insect pests and rated them in the insect resistance scoring scale and they showed that these varieties are less susceptible to major insect pests along with other good traits like yield and quality parameters.
(i).JBMP-3 (Priya). This variety has been developed to increase the fibre productivity with enhanced fibre quality coupled with tolerance to insect pests. It exhibited 6-21% better resistance to the insect pests. It peformed 10.76% better than check variety (26.16 q/ ha).
(ii).JBMP-4 (Utkarsh). It exhibited better resistance to the foot and stem rot disease and also resistance to insect pests. It is suitable for the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tripura and Assam.Gazette of India: Notification No. 1326. New Delhi, 02nd April 2019/ Chaitra 12, 1941.

3. Bioassay technique of transgenic Jute: Standardized the whole plant and detached leaf bioassay techniques/methodology for transgenic jute plants carrying Cry1ab/Cry1ac genes against three lepidopteron pests of jute Viz., semilooper (Anomissabulifera), jute hairy caterpillar (Spilosomaobliqua), and Indigo caterpillar (Spodopteraexigua).

4. Identified the Biochemical Basis for Insect Resistance:Biochemical basis ofhost plant resistance (HPR) as an approach in pest management offers many advantages. Hence, I have deciphered the biochemical basis of HPR in wild jute species, Corchorusaestuans (WCIN 179) which has imparted resistance against jute hairy caterpillar, Spilosomaobliquathrough the presence of higher level of phenolic and peroxidase content.

 Received, Best Poster Award for the paper “Mechanism of resistance of wild jute to Bihar hairy caterpillar, Spilosomaobliqua Walker (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae)” in theInternational symposium on Food security Dilemma: Plant Health and climate change issues heldat BCKV, Kalyani.
