About
Dillip Kumar Bishi is currently working as an Assistant Professor in Biotechnology at Ramadevi Women's University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India since 1st of June 2018. Before joining as Assistant Professor, he was working as a Post Doctoral Researcher at 3B’S Research Group, a member of the Portuguese Government Associate Laboratory ICVS/3B’s, University of Minho, under the supervision of Prof. Rui L Reis, since April 2014. He finished his Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Medical Biotechnology (2007) and Ph.D in Biotechnology (2013) from Department of Biotechnology Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India- with the thesis entitled “Liver tissue engineering using human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells” under the guidance of Prof. Rama Shanker Verma and Dr. Soma Guhathakurta, Indian Institute of Technology Madras and a part of thesis carried out at Center for Nanofiber and Nanoscience Technology, National University of Singapore under the supervision of Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna.
At 3B’s Research Group, he is working on a highly innovative ERC(European Research Council)-Advanced grant, ComplexiTE, that involves an integrated multidisciplinary tissue engineering approach combining novel high-throughput screening and advanced methodologies to create complex biomaterials-stem cells constructs. Current focus is on naturally derived hydrogel based tissue engineering approaches for cell encapsulation, using highly reproducible microfluidics approach. His research interests are tissue engineering at microscale for high-throughput assessment of stem cell-biomaterials interactions. He is currently awarded with a FCT R& D Project Grant as Principal Investigator with a focus to develop "A novel bi-compartmentalized hydrogel microcapsule as 3D co-culture system for liver tissue microengineering and drug-induced hepatotoxicity screening" at 3B's Research Group: Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics, University of Minho, Portugal. Before moving to 3B’s research group, he was working as a Research Scientist at Stem cells and Tissue Engineering Division, Frontier Lifeline Hospital & Dr. K. M. Cherian Heart Foundation, Chennai, India (2007-2014), where he has experience in isolation, maintenance and liver tissue engineering applications of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in a clinical setting as well as being a team member of a clinical trial involving autologous mononuclear stem cell transplantation for cardiomyoplasty. There he was awarded with a "Pilot Project Grant for Young Investigators in Cancer Biology" as principal investigator for the project “siRNA induced Cancer Stem cell targeted therapy for pancreatic cancer” supported and Funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Dr. Bishi expertise in assessing the fate of encapsulated adult stem cells within natural-origin hydrogel matrices for microscale tissue engineering such as development of bioartificial microliver and vascularized bone models, which are being applied for high-throughput screening of drug-induced hepatotoxicity and stem cells-biomaterials interactions respectively. He has 25 publications listed in ISI Web of Science and also presented in many national and international conferences.
