About
I have been working on the various aspects of rice germplasm conservation, evaluation, documentation and crop improvement for the last 27 years. At present, I had been actively involved in maintenance of around 7000 rice germplasms and in rice varietal improvement for various eco-systems of Assam. Associated with various national and international research projects since 1996. Presently, looking after the Agricultural Research Management of Assam Agricultural University. Experience of working as Principal Investigator of fifteen National and International Projects funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India; Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Arunachal Government, International Rice Research Institute, Philippines; Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, Norway.
Introgressed Sub-1 QTL in the popular rice varieties, Ranjit and Bahadur of Assam. The varieties notified during 2018, are the first products developed and released for farmers using biotechnological tools in entire North East India. The area covered by these two varieties are more than five lakh hectares. Further, have been involved in the development of thirteen other rice varieties suitable for different agro-ecological situations of Assam. These varieties were recommended by Assam Agricultural University for cultivation in Assam and the varieties are Numali, Shraboni, Mulagabhoru suitable for higher cropping intensity areas; Gitesh for staggered planting; Dhansiri, Dipholu, Chakra Sali, Manah for water logged situation; Dholi (TTB-U-86) for flood prone areas of the state and a HYV Surma Dhan notified by the Government of India during 2022. Of these, Numali was notified during 2020 and Gitesh during 2017. A BB introgressed variety, Patkai has been developed and notified by the Government of India during 2023. Satabdi and Prasur, two high yielding rice varieties potential replacement of Ranjit also notified by the Government of India during 2023.
Identified suitable seven hybrid rice varieties in Assam based on on-station and on-farm trials and the hybrids are recommendation by Assam Agricultural University for cultivation in Assam.
Experienced working on Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS). Worked on PVS of few stress tolerant high yielding varieties in the flood prone areas of Assam, India. Based on the PVS data of 2008 to 2018, four lines have been recommended for the farmers during 2011. Another, Sub 1 introgressed lines, Swarna Sub 1 and BR11Sub-1 are also recommended by the University for cultivation in Assam.
