Dr. Alireza Rastegarpanah recently joined Aston University as an Assistant Professor in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, while also serving as a Visiting Professor at the University of Brescia, and an Honorary Fellow and Co-Founder of the Extreme Robotics Lab at the University of Birmingham, where he currently leads a research team under his supervision. He has extensive research experience as a Research Fellow across several prestigious research organisations, including the Faraday Institution, University College London, The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and The University of Birmingham. His research focuses on developing AI-driven, vision-guided manipulation frameworks integrated with telerobotics, extended reality, and digital twins, particularly for deployment in hazardous and complex environments. Over the past decade, his work has centred on robotising the processes of testing, disassembly, and sorting of complex products, especially electric vehicle (EV) batteries, for the reuse and recycling of critical raw materials. He serves as Co-PI of the €6 M REBELION project, which aims to robotise EV battery disassembly through the concept of the digital battery passport. He has also contributed significantly to the £18 M RELIB project, which led to the establishment of the National Sustainable Robotics Centre (NSRC) within the Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre at Tyseley Energy Park. As one of the NSRC’s co-founders, he has helped build it into a national facility for scaling up robotics research and demonstrating technologies to industry and stakeholders. Beyond manufacturing and sustainability, Alireza has worked extensively in the medical and healthcare sectors and in robotics for hazardous environments, serving as PI, Co-I, and lead researcher on several funded projects. He maintains close collaborations with industry, including partners from the High Value Manufacturing Catapult Centres, and has delivered multiple successful knowledge-transfer outcomes alongside a diverse portfolio of scientific publications in robotics, AI, and automation. In recognition of these contributions, he received the Robotics Sustainability Leadership Award in 2025, jointly awarded by euRobotics and ARIA.
