About
I am passionate about achieving the goals of this proposal, "Multi-omics Endophenotyping of Weight Loss in COPD," under the mentorship of Dr. Merry-Lynn McDonald. Over the past 8 years across experimental and computational biology, I have acquired and developed a skillset enabling the achievement of the goals of this proposal. As an undergraduate in Biotechnology at Banasthali University, I first found myself intrigued by the molecular basis of immune dysfunction while studying cellular and molecular biology, an interest sharpened by a family member's diagnosis with systemic lupus erythematosus. To pair that biological grounding with analytical capability, I took certificate coursework offered by Department's of Computer Science and Statistics. I then joined the Genomics Lab at Tata Consultancy Services under Dr. Binuja Varma, where my research focused on pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia in collaboration with Tata Medical Centre; prioritizing gene panels, preparing exome libraries, sequencing on the Illumina platform, and running NGS analysis pipelines in Python. That experience made clear that the interpretive bottleneck in genomics is computational, and led me to pursue a Master's in Computational Biology at IIIT Delhi, supported by a Government of India AICTE GATE scholarship. There I developed Strainflow, a predictive model for COVID-19 case surges, under Dr. Tavpritesh Sethi, and contributed to ViracVacDB, a manually curated web based repository of human based viral vaccine and CLBTope, a machine-learning classifier for B-cell epitope prediction with Prof. G.P.S. Raghava. I returned to the TCS Genomics Lab as a Data Science Researcher focused on multi-omics biomarker identification, where I curated an annotated Gene Ontology cellular components database across six model organisms and built SurfacOmics, an R-Shiny application that predicts and prioritizes cell-surface markers from transcriptomic and proteomic data using penalized regression. With my interest in biomedical science and bioinformatics, I wanted to make transition to more focused research environment to deepen my understanding in data-driven translational research, I enrolled into the Graduate Biomedical Science Program with Blazer Fellowship, offered by University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), with specialization in Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics (GGB). Following my initial coursework and lab rotation with Dr. Ryan Irvin and Dr. Elizabeth Worthey, I joined Dr. Merry-Lynn McDonald’s lab with focus understanding genetics of complex disease using integrative omics that serve broader population. I was intrigued shift my focus to complex, multifactorial conditions that affects broader population where molecular risk factors remain poorly characterized, which drew me to COPD and the metabolic endophenotypes underlying weight loss. This trajectory has trained me in scientific computing, biostatistics, bioinformatics, and translational omics. To continue to expand and refine these skillsets, I have identified additional training in these that will facilitate the successful completion of the proposed research. The McDonald lab's use of epidemiology and integrative 'omics to investigate molecular risk factors in complex disease places me in an ideal environment for this work, and my current research environment along with my proposed training plan provides a solid foundation for my long-term goal to become a principal data scientist in translational medicine informatics.
