About
My current role is focussed on the development of innovative bidirectional 3-phase transformers that will improve grid stability and be suitable for use with renewable energy sources. I work on grain oriented steels for the electromagnetic core considering materials selection and properties, manufacturing processes and testing requirements to ensure the required performance standards are consistently achieved.
My research at USW focused on innovative electric motor development for EV within the Advanced Electric Propulsion Research Group at the University of South Wales. I performed research to deliver next generation EV motors for vehicles including cars, vans, large road vehicles, trains, buses, marine, yellow goods and aviation sectors. I actively participated in collaborative R&D to design and develop high performance electric motors using revolutionary design techniques, modelling and optimisation of the manufacturing processes associated with robust motor control for enhanced performance in a wide operating environment. My role involved the development of NGO grades for use in electric motors, their properties and performance (magnetic, mechanical, thermal, coatings etc.) together with design, modelling, building and testing of electric motors.
I am an experienced Metallurgy and Materials Science professional; I am an active member and Fellow of IOM3 and the current Chair of the Energy Materials Group (EMG). To complement my academic qualifications and industrial experience I completed a specialist Technology Management MBA to enable increased contribution in technology-based leadership and management roles. I am a Welsh Crucible alumnus, a programme to develop research leaders and have recently completed an ILM Leadership qualification. I have undertaken several roles requiring an innovative approach in research, process technology and product development in the steel industry and have taken up a new challenge in academia. My current research scope includes low magnetic loss high strength non-grain oriented electrical steels for EV applications particularly optimising the use of NGO electrical steels in electric motors.
