About
Research Interest: Analysis of innate and adaptive immune responses.
Summary of Research
The broad aim of research efforts in my laboratory is to track the generation and maintenance of immune responses following infection or cancer and to study the crosstalk between Myeloid Derived Suppressor Cells (MDSCs) and T Cells.
We have the following two major areas of interest:
1. Understanding the role of MDSCs in the development of the immunosuppressive networks in the cancer:
MDSCs are a heterogeneous population of cells that consists of myeloid progenitor cells and immature myeloid cells. In healthy individuals, MDSCs are generated in the bone marrow and quickly differentiate into mature granulocytes, DCs or macrophages. However, under pathological conditions (such as cancer), various infectious diseases and certain autoimmune diseases, a partial block in the MDSC differentiation into mature myeloid cells results in the expansion of this cell population. The ability of MDSCs to suppress antitumor Th1 cells and cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL) immune responses have been demonstrated to impact the immune system directly and indirectly. The unique roles of MDSCs in the development of the immunosuppressive network indicate that this cell population may have potential as a therapeutic modality in cancer.
2. Identification of novel biomarkers of sepsis and septic shock in trauma patients
The primary focus of our research is to understand how Trauma haemorrhagic shock (THS) patients developed complications such as sepsis, septic shock and MOF in the ICU. We are mainly interested to know how changes in serum levels of biological markers such as cytokines, chemokines and C-reactive proteins correlate with severity of injury and outcomes. We are using the approach of molecular biology and immunology to understand the causes of mortality in THS patients.
