About
Dr. Mohan Kumar Mallick is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur, India. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2019 under the joint supervision of Prof. S. Sundar and Prof. R. Shivaji. His doctoral research concerned steady-state reaction-diffusion equations with falling-zero terms and nonlinear boundary conditions. He subsequently completed a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Centre for Applicable Mathematics (TIFR CAM), Bengaluru, under the mentorship of Prof. Agnid Banerjee. Before joining VNIT Nagpur in July 2022, he served as an Assistant Professor at SRM University-AP.
His research lies in the qualitative analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations. His principal interests include fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations, Pucci extremal operators, viscosity solutions, singular nonlinearities, natural growth in the gradient, regularity theory, principal eigenvalues, and nonlinear spectral geometry. A central theme of his work is understanding how nonlinear structure, boundary mechanisms, and domain geometry influence the existence, uniqueness, multiplicity, regularity, and qualitative behaviour of solutions.
Alongside fully nonlinear PDEs, he works on reaction-diffusion equations, semipositone problems, nonlinear boundary conditions, bifurcation theory, and mathematical models arising in ecology. His research also explores shape optimization and Pólya-type problems for principal eigenvalues, optimal harvesting and control problems, and connections between Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, viscosity solutions, and learning-based control.
Dr. Mallick is the Principal Investigator of the five-year ANRF ARG-MATRICS project “Shape Optimization of Principal Eigenvalue for Fully Nonlinear Operators: Theoretical and Geometric Advances on Pólya-Type Problems” (2026–2031; Grant No. ANRF/ARGM/2025/002309/MTR), funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, Government of India.
At VNIT Nagpur, he is actively involved in postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, research supervision, and academic outreach. He currently supervises three Ph.D. scholars and mentors M.Sc. dissertation students working on nonlinear PDEs, viscosity solutions, shape optimization, optimal control, and mathematical ecology. He also convened the five-day Workshop on Partial Differential Equations: Theory and Numerics at VNIT Nagpur.
