About
I study how crops trade water for carbon, and what breaks when we try to shift that trade in our favor. I am a Research Scholar at Iowa State University's AI Institute for Resilient Agriculture, working across process-based crop modeling, plant biophysics, and computational plant science. Before Iowa State, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
I hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, specializing in Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. My doctoral research examined the physiological and environmental trade-offs of improving crop water-use efficiency. I followed a single question — what does a plant give up when it saves water — through photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and leaf energy balance, then asked whether the answer survives the jump from a single leaf to a whole canopy. It often does not. I earned my B.Tech. in Civil Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, graduating with the University Gold Medal.
My current work builds digital twins of crop canopies: three-dimensional reconstructions of real plants coupled to GPU-accelerated radiation transfer and leaf-level biophysics, with machine learning applied where the physics is expensive or the parameters cannot be observed directly. Related interests include C3 and C4 photosynthesis, canopy radiation and energy balance, plant–atmosphere interactions and scalar transport, photosynthetic parameter estimation, and the integration of detailed plant biophysics into operational crop models such as DSSAT and APSIM.
My research has appeared in journals including Plant, Cell & Environment and Transport in Porous Media. My honors include the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship, the OPJEMS Scholarship, the NIT Tiruchirappalli University Gold Medal, and the IIT Madras World Water Day Best Poster Award.
