About
After working in academia and then in rugby league development and promotion, I have spent the last 25 years working in community engagement, development and in the specific areas of equality, diversity, community cohesion and human rights. I was Lead Officer in these fields at Leicestershire County Council until September 2015, when I left to pursue a new career as an independent equality, diversity and mental health lived experience consultant.
I am currently working with the Centre for Ethnic Health Research (CEHR) based within ARC East Midlands as well as for various Universities, where I have been providing guidance and advice on equality and diverse community-related concerns and involving myself in some specific lived experience work relating to mental health and autism. My work for the CEHR specifically involves the delivery of training modules, the development of equality approaches as well as responsibility for developing and implementing the Equality Impact Assessment process, fundamental to research undertaken under ARC East Midlands.
My identity as a passionate campaigner for human rights stems from my own mental illness (I have clinical depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Anxiety Disorder) and autism and from the life of my brother, Danny, who had Down Syndrome and who passed away in 1996. I have recently created a Facebook page (‘Our Danny’s Legacy – Living with Down Syndrome’) to help draw attention to the condition and associated issues, with a view to eventually writing a book focusing on Danny’s life and to the wider and broader issue of discrimination.
I devote a lot of my time to encouraging a greater awareness and understanding of mental ill health and autism. I have spoken in the media, to organisations and in public on these matters.
I am also an acclaimed writer, publishing books on rugby league, the Holocaust and – most recently – a diary of a year living with mental illness, called ‘A Year in Melancholia’. I have also developed a website showcasing his own contemporary photographs of Holocaust sites (see Home | Shoah Images)
