Soumen Sen

About

Soumen Sen is currently working as a Chief Scientist and heading the Human Centred Robotics and Cybernetics Group at CSIR–Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Durgapur (Web: www.cmeri.res.in) and is a Professor in the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, the academic wing of CSIR, Govt. of India. He joined CSIR-CMERI in the regular post as Principal Scientist in 2011. Previously, Soumen Sen had served as a Scientific Officer in Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore from Nov. 1994 to Nov. 1996, and in Division of Remote Handling and Robotics, BARC, Mumbai from Nov. 1996 to July 2005, both being under Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India. He was associated with two European Commission Framework Programme (FP6 & FP7) multinational projects in the area of physical-Human-Robot Interaction during 2006 to 2010 and did his postdoctoral work during 2009-2010 in the Interdepartmental Research Centre “E Piaggio” of the University of Pisa, Italy. Soumen Sen received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Eng. from NIT, Durgapur (erstwhile R.E.C) in 1992, Master’s degree in Production Technology from Jadavpur Univ., Kolkata in 1994 and Ph.D. degree in Robotics from the University of Pisa, Italy in 2009. His specializations in robotics are design and control of machines for physical human robot interaction (pHRI), Compliant Actuators and biomimetics for robotic mechanisms. He is currently involved in activities involving Variable Impedance Actuation and Control, design and development of compliant manipulation systems, biomimetic actuation for underwater vehicles, design and development of underwater manipulators and tendon/cable driven manipulation.
