About

I am a seasoned agricultural and rural development economist with more than 35 years (17 years
as full professor) of national and international experience in research, teaching, extension and
administration. I have published ~175 (137 full +38 abstracts) peer-reviewed research papers in
several journals of national/ international repute and authored two books. I have successfully
managed more than 50 national and international funded research projects/studies resulting in
around 65 project reports and guided more than 15 graduate students (Ph.D. and M.S.) as a major
professor. I am also an avid speaker and presenter at several national and international forums.
My work on agriculture and rural development has taken me to many countries across five
continents of the globe. In the past, I led the efforts of the Agro Economic Research Center -
AERC (Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, GOI), Punjab Agricultural University, for
about 12 years as the Center Director and Professor. AERC – The ears and eyes of NITI Aayog
(formerly Planning Commission) primarily serves as a technical advisor to the Government of
India and the State Government of Punjab. I briefly served as a consultant for the World Bank
and as a visiting Associate Professor at Haramaya University, Ethiopia (on sabbatical). I also
served as a visiting researcher with organizations such as International Rice Research Institute
(IRRI), Philippines, The World Vegetable Center (AVRDC), Taiwan, and International Food
Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), U.S.A. Besides, I have also been an expert member on the
Board of Studies of several national and state universities, research advisory councils, and
selection committees. I have received several academic accolades for my contribution to
agricultural research and beyond. Currently, I am working as a Professor of Agricultural
Economics at the Lovely Professional University, Punjab, teaching graduate courses. I have
taught courses such as Agricultural Development and Policy, Agribusiness Management, Credit
and Finance, Money and Banking, International Trade, Advanced Micro, and Macro Economics,
etc. both in India as well as in Ethiopia. My research interests are farm and rural economics,
agricultural trade, policy evaluation, agricultural technology impact assessment, food security,
farmer distress, agricultural marketing, and dairy and livestock economics, etc.
