Dr. Reshma Mathew is a photochemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy researcher specializing in the investigation of excited-state dynamics and light-induced processes in molecular and nanoscale systems. She has over nine years of experience designing and operating advanced laser-based optical systems to probe ultrafast photophysical and photochemical mechanisms.
She is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University, where her research focuses on the photophysics and photochemistry of DNA and RNA systems. Using femtosecond transient absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques, her work aims to uncover molecular mechanisms underlying nucleic acid photodamage and resonance energy transfer processes.
Prior to joining CWRU, Dr. Mathew served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, contributing to the NSF-funded IMOD project. Her work there explored strong light–matter coupling, single-particle nonlinear optics, and exciton–polariton formation in hybrid nanophotonic systems using dark-field scattering and single-particle luminescence spectroscopy.
Dr. Mathew earned her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram, where her doctoral research focused on ultrafast proton-coupled electron transfer and excited-state structural dynamics using femtosecond spectroscopic methods combined with electronic-structure calculations. Her research has led to multiple peer-reviewed publications and international conference presentations in the areas of photochemistry, spectroscopy, and nanophotonics.
Her broader research interests include ultrafast spectroscopy, photochemical reaction dynamics, optical instrumentation, and data-driven analysis, with applications spanning photomedicine, nanotechnology, and advanced functional materials.
