About

Dr. Arnab Ghosh is a cancer researcher at Flinders University, Adelaide, where he holds the prestigious Marion McCormack Research Fellowship at the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI). He completed a Bachelor of Honours in Veterinary Medicine, a Master of Research in Virology, and a PhD in Reproductive Biology from the University of Newcastle in 2019. Through his research, Dr. Ghosh identified the stem cells of the fallopian tube and detailed their role in ovarian cancer. He published this finding in one of the most reputable journals in the field, named Development, in 2017. He further advanced this research by publishing another groundbreaking discovery in the high-impact journal Cell Reports on the role of mesenchymal-epithelial transition in Fallopian Tube and Uterine epithelial homeostasis. Together, these findings have opened a powerful new avenue by understanding precisely which cells give rise to these cancers and how they change at the earliest stages. Dr. Ghosh's work holds the potential to inform the development of early detection tests for both ovarian and endometrial cancer, two of the most challenging gynaecological cancers to diagnose before they reach an advanced stage.

Before his current role, Dr. Ghosh completed a prestigious Research Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA, one of the world's leading medical institutions, where he worked at the cutting edge of translational cancer research. At Mayo Clinic, he contributed to a landmark breast cancer organoid biobank initiative, directly isolating and growing miniature tumour models from minute surgical biopsy samples obtained from patients a technically demanding process that bridges the laboratory and the clinic. This clinical environment experience, working alongside surgeons, oncologists and researchers, has given Dr. Ghosh a rare ability to translate laboratory discoveries into real-world patient impact. Throughout his research journey, he also built active research collaborations with internationally renowned institutions, including NYU Langone Health, the University of Pittsburgh and Mayo Clinic, advancing biomarker discovery, antibody-drug conjugate studies and precision oncology programmes. In recognition of his scientific standing, Dr. Ghosh was also among a select group of high-achieving researchers worldwide chosen to test and evaluate Google's world-first Co-Scientist artificial intelligence platform, working directly with the Google team to assess its potential to generate testable hypotheses to accelerate biomarker discovery and drug development in cancer research.

The belief that every woman deserves the chance to take control of her health through early detection and access to accurate, personalised treatment is what drives Dr. Ghosh's research. His current work is focused on understanding the earliest cellular changes that give rise to gynaecological cancers, particularly ovarian and endometrial cancer, to catch these diseases at a stage when they are still treatable and survival outcomes are at their best. To pursue his research goals, Dr. Ghosh used his Veterinary Medicine skills to develop multiple genetically modified mouse lines and patient-derived xenograft mouse models to study gynaecological cancer progression and treatment options. He is one of the leading experts for developing a technology called "organ on a chip" (scientifically known as organoids when developed from healthy tissue and tumoroids when developed from cancer tissue). With this technique Dr. Ghosh develops mini reproductive organs from healthy or cancer tissue to mimic the exact structure and function of the organ inside the patient's body. Excitingly, studies have shown that these tumoroids can predict a patient's response to treatment with remarkable accuracy, offering a powerful tool to identify the right drug for the right patient, without unnecessary trial and error. His recent focus is to add immune cells to these mini tumoroid structures to study the interaction between immunity and cancer cells.

Besides his passion for research, Dr. Ghosh is a strong advocate of women's health. In his career, he has established himself in an exemplary category of scientists who can work across both laboratory and clinical sciences, which is reflected by numerous invitations to present his work at national and international conferences, including the Stem Cell Meeting at Melbourne, Society of Reproductive Biology annual meetings at Sydney and Perth, and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Italy. He is also actively involved in teaching the future generations of Australian scientists and has supervised multiple PhD and Honours students. The quality of his research is reflected by his first-, co- and senior-authored publications in international scientific journals, including high-impact journals like Development, Cell Reports, Cell Stem Cell, PNAS, Nature Communications and Cell Reports Medicine.
