About

Dr. Shiv Narayan Rai is a dedicated researcher and molecular biologist with a profound interest in understanding the intricate regulatory mechanisms of life at the molecular level. His journey in the realm of science began with an illustrious academic record, having secured First Position and Distinction during both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Biosciences at Jamia Millia Islamia in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

Dr. Rai recently completed his PhD in RNA Biology at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Delhi under the supervision of Dr. Tanmay Dutta. His doctoral research focused on elucidating the role of small RNAs (sRNAs) in the extremophile bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans. Specifically, he investigated how sRNAs modulate gene regulatory mechanisms to maintain manganese homeostasis, a crucial factor in stress response and DNA repair in extreme conditions. His groundbreaking research contributed novel insights into the field of sRNA biology, as evidenced by his publications in reputable journals like Applied and Environmental Microbiology and Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications.

A skilled experimentalist, Dr. Rai has mastered a wide array of molecular biology techniques, including RNA-seq, gene knockout strategies, RACE, RNA in vitro transcription, RNA-RNA binding assays, RT-qPCR, DNA cloning, and blotting methods. His technical expertise is complemented by his passion for exploring fundamental biological questions, particularly in the context of stress responses and non-coding RNA functions.

Expanding his research horizons, Dr. Rai is now focusing on mammalian systems. His interests include investigating the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as host-dependency factors in HIV-1 replication and latency. Through molecular virology, immunology, and genomics, he aims to identify cellular and viral vulnerabilities for developing therapeutic interventions against HIV-1.

Throughout his academic and professional journey, Dr. Rai has demonstrated a blend of scientific rigor, humility, and perseverance. He is the sole researcher in India working on small RNAs in D. radiodurans and has garnered respect for his originality and dedication. His efforts are now directed towards postdoctoral research opportunities to further his scientific pursuits and make meaningful contributions to biomedical science.

Dr. Shiv Narayan Rai’s vision is to advance our understanding of molecular biology and leverage this knowledge to develop therapies for some of humanity's most pressing health challenges.
