About
Soumik Dey Roy is an emerging academic in the field of agricultural sciences, with an evolving specialization in agricultural entomology, arthropod ecology, and integrated pest management (IPM). He currently holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Agriculture at Brainware University, Kolkata, India. He earned his Master of Science in Agriculture (Entomology) from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya with distinction and qualified the UGC-NET in Environmental Sciences with a percentile score of 98.64%. Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. in Agricultural Entomology at Palli Siksha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, where his research focuses on pest dynamics and ecological interactions among arthropods in crop ecosystems.
His academic and research career is rooted in the practical challenges of pest management in Indian agriculture. Soumik’s research interests include insect morphology, trophic interactions in agro-ecosystems, the bio-efficacy and dose-response dynamics of insecticides (particularly the phenomenon of hormesis), plant-parasitic nematode ecology, and the use of entomopathogenic nematodes as biological control agents. His work often integrates field-level experimentation with ecological theory, aiming to improve the sustainability and efficiency of pest control practices.
Soumik has published several peer-reviewed research articles in both national and international journals indexed in SCOPUS, Web of Science, and NAAS. His papers cover diverse topics including population dynamics of sucking pests in groundnut, pest management strategies in soybean, and ecological reviews on the role of ants in agriculture. He has also authored chapters in edited volumes on topics such as reproductive biology in insects, entomopathogenic nematodes, and IPM in oilseed crops. In addition, he co-authored the reference book Insect Pests of Horticultural Crops and Their Management, and contributed as an editor to Krishi Shiksha, an academic publication initiative within his department.
In the field of academic publishing, Soumik plays an active role as a reviewer and editorial board member. He currently serves as Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Entomology and as Assistant Editor of the International Journal of Entomology Research, contributing to the peer review and editorial management of manuscripts. He is also an editorial board member of the International Journal of Insects and Acta Scientific Agriculture, and has reviewed papers for several other international journals, such as the ISJ-Invertebrate Survival Journal, Journal of Orthoptera Research, Biodiversity Data Journal, Journal of Advances in Biology and Biotechnology, and others. His cumulative reviewer contributions span over 50 manuscripts across a wide range of entomological and agricultural themes.
Soumik’s research is not limited to academic publications. He has contributed to the innovation and application of pest management technologies through four patent-published inventions. These include the dose optimization of novel insecticidal compounds for lepidopteran pests in groundnut, the design of a manually operated spring-tooth weeder for horticultural crops, an optimized lentil storage protocol, and a standardized RNA extraction method for pigeon pea. These innovations aim to offer low-cost, field-adaptable solutions for Indian farmers, reflecting his commitment to bridging scientific research with practical agricultural needs.
As part of his broader engagement with agricultural development, he has participated in Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) programs across multiple villages in West Bengal, and has hands-on training in commercial beekeeping and bio-pesticide formulation. He has also participated in faculty development and research training programs, including those conducted by ICAR-IARI and Brainware University.
Soumik is an Annual Member of the Entomological Society of India (ESI), one of the leading professional bodies in Indian entomology. His commitment to education is further demonstrated through the wide range of undergraduate courses he teaches, such as Fundamentals of Entomology, Pests of Crops and Stored Grains, Management of Beneficial Insects, and Integrated Pest and Disease Management, among others. He combines classroom teaching with field-based training to help students connect entomological concepts with real-world farming systems.
Balancing his roles as a teacher, researcher, reviewer, and innovator, Soumik Dey Roy continues to build a well-rounded academic profile. He brings to his work a combination of scientific curiosity, practical sensibility, and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. While still in the early stages of his academic career, he aspires to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of ecologically responsible pest management and agricultural resilience—both in India and beyond.
