About
Dr. Samrat Chakraborty is a wildlife biologist and conservation educator working on species conservation, wetland ecology, environmental education, and community-based conservation in West Bengal, India. His research has focused extensively on the ecology, distribution, habitat use, and conservation challenges of the Fishing Cat (*Prionailurus viverrinus*), particularly in the wetland landscapes of southern West Bengal and the Sundarbans.
His work combines field-based ecological research, camera trapping, community engagement, and conservation awareness to understand and address threats to wildlife in human-dominated landscapes. He has been involved in long-term Fishing Cat studies across wetland habitats and has contributed to research and conservation initiatives involving local communities, Biodiversity Management Committees, NGOs, Forest Department personnel, fishers, and other local stakeholders.
Dr. Chakraborty also works extensively on wetland conservation and environmental awareness, conducting nature education programmes, awareness camps, capacity-building sessions, and community outreach activities focusing on wetland biodiversity, lesser cats, mangroves, and human–wildlife coexistence.
He was a grantee under the Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Biodiversity, Ecology, Environment and Sustainability (WCT-BEES) programme for research on environmental contaminants in Fishing Cats of the Sundarbans, investigating heavy metal and microplastic exposure through field-based sampling and ecological monitoring.
Currently, as Senior Education Officer with WWF-India, West Bengal State Office, he works at the interface of scientific research, conservation education, and community engagement, developing and implementing programmes that connect biodiversity research with practical conservation and environmental awareness.
