About
Forty years of research experience exclusively in the fields of organic / polymeric synthesis, modification, application and processing. The specialized discipline of organic chemistry integrated with the experience of polymer science has graduated me as a material scientist capable of designing and developing new materials of industrial significance. During the period, I have worked on synthesis of naturally occurring coumarin derivatives as bioactive compounds, polyglycolic acid / polylactic acid and their copolymers with caprolactone for suture application, styrene – butadiene – styrene triblock copolymer and its modification to environmentally stable hydrogenated SEBS, pyruvic acid based Super Absorbent Polymers. Also, perfluorinated lubricating oil from hexafluoro propylene as radiation resistant materials, polyurethane based perm selective membranes may be highlighted as the areas of experience in the field of polymer synthesis.
Besides the polymer synthesis, processes for the modification of guar to its ethoxylated, propoxylated, methylated, carboxymethylated and sulphonated derivatives were developed for health care, pharmaceutical and oil drilling applications. The grafting of guar and its hydrophobic modifications may also be referred as areas of interest.
During the tenure, I have been associated with numerous R & D as well as consultancy projects (Annexure) related to organic molecule synthesis involving packman condensation, benzhydrlylation, benzylation, esterification, etherification, halogenation, hydrogenation, cyclic dimerization, polycondensation, block co-polymerization; polymer modification, processing and characterization; natural and synthetic fibre spinning, specialty fibre characterization and their processing; formulations for paper and jute fabric adhesives; standardization of method for identification of polychlorinated biphenyls in the oils and paints collected from obsolete ships coming to Alang breaking yard, Gujarat and development of the process for remediation of PCB’s utilizing radiation technique
Apart from the above, the salient contributions towards industrial process/products development during the period may be highlighted as under:
• ETP sludge of viscose fibre industry and coal mix burning in boilers
• Arrest of filamentation phenomenon during rayon process
• Classification of Cassia meal waste generated during cassia gum powder making
• UV curable wood coating compositions for performance enhancement
• Country position report and techno-economic feasibility study on ethanol for transportation sector in India
Some of the focus areas of research pursued presently is listed as under:
• Effect of ionizing radiation on conversion of biomass into ethanol
• Glycolide - Caprolactone based monofilament suture
• Fluorinated polymers for strategic applications
• Technology Business Incubation in the field of polymers & rubbers, specialty formulations & industrial waste utilization
While undertaking various research studies on laboratory, pilot and plant scale in the field of polymer synthesis, modification and application, polymer characterization was undertaken for their various physico-mechanical, chemical, rheological, thermal properties etc. using various national / international standards. Analytical expertise was gained while performing duties as Technical Head of analytical sections in the field of rubber, plastic, textile and papers. The certification of these materials was performed as per national & international standards. It provides me the opportunity to become conversant with numerous analytical techniques applied on these materials.
