About

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Koul young teacher and researcher have significantly contributed in field of wild mushrooms systematic and ethnomycology of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh (UTs). Dr. Kumar is a Young ‘mycologist'. He was one of the first research scholars who have attained the importance of ‘diversity’ and ‘ethnomycology’ of macrofungi in the Union Territory of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh. His academic distinctions to the growth of science of Mycology have been recognized both National and International level.
1. Early life and Education
Dr. Koul was born on 18th March 1978 in Mohalla Khakhal of Tehsil Bhaderwah, District Doda, J&K (UT). He had his early education at Adarsh Vidya Mandir Bhaderwah and Govt. Higher Secondary School (Boys) Bhaderwah (1993-1996). He did B.Sc. (Medical) with a first class from Govt. Degree College Bhaderwah (1996-1999), B.Ed. from MIER College Jammu (2000) and M.Sc. (Botany) from the Meerut College Meerut, Uttar Pardesh (2001-2003). Dr. Kumar later joined the Department of Botany, University of Jammu to work for his Ph.D. Degree under the benevolent supervision of Dr. Yash Pal Sharma (Prof.). He was awarded Ph.D. Degree (2009) for his thesis on “Taxonomic and Ethnomycological Studies of Fleshy Fungi in some regions of District Doda”. Subsequently he received the D.Sc. (2020) (Doctrin de Science Award Honoris Causa) in the field of Mycology & Plant Pathology by Division of Certification and Accreditation, International Agency for Standard and Ratings.
2. Professional Experience including Current position
Starting his career as a Teacher at Middle School Sindra, Bhaderwah in the Department of School Education and Govt. of J&K (2009-2013). Presently, he is posted as Teacher and Associate NCC Officer at Govt. Higher Secondary School Bhalra, Bhaderwah, J&K (UT). During his career, he was recipient of Summer Research Fellowship of Indian National Science Academy and did his work at CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bio-resource Technology (CSIR-IHBT) under the guidance of Dr. P.S. Ahuja then the Director General CSIR, which enabled him to carry out a detailed work on Mushroom Flora of Jammu and Kashmir. At the young age, he attended the 18th International Congress of Mushroom Science at Beijing, China (2012) and visited several research centers of Mycology across the country and abroad and discussed mycology with leading scientists in the country and abroad. He has presented his research work at 62 National and 14 International conferences/Seminars/ Symposia/ workshops and has published 52 research publications, 85 abstracts in National and International journals repute and 05 books in general and Red List of Macrofungi of India in particular with Harsh et.al., 2021. Number of research students has now adopted this field of research in the biodiversity rich state of Jammu and Kashmir, India.
3. Membership of Professional Societies
Dr. Koul is a Life member of Mycological Society of India, National Environmental Science Academy, Indian Mushrooms Growers Association, Journal of Scientific & Applied Research, Journal of Plant Development Sciences, Mushrooms Society of India, Indian Science Congress Association, Asian Biological Research Foundation (ABRF) and Association of Fungal Biologists.
4. Significant Contribution to Mycology
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Koul major contributions in mycology are on macrofungal Systematics and Ethnomycology. He is pioneering researcher from J&K, who worked on the exploration of Mushrooms flora of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh in general and Jammu Province in particular resulted in the discovery and description of numerous new and interesting species of macrofungi.
