About
Shinjita Roy is a site-specific choreographer, architect and Kathak dancer from India, currently based in Naarm, Australia. Her work aims to initiate conversations between built form and human movement, offering an embodied corporeality of architecture. As a dance scholar, educator and practitioner, she actively participates in discourses that critically enquire and negotiate application of Indian classical dance knowledges within a broader internationally inclusive landscape. She is an architecture graduate from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (2012), following which she completed her MA in Performance Training at University of Plymouth (2018) and has more recently finished a practice-led PhD at VCA Dance, University of Melbourne (2025). With a diverse background as both an architect and a performance-maker, she has amassed extensive experience working in various cities, rural landscapes, and heritage sites across India, Gabon, the UK, and Australia.
In recent years, Shinjita has delved into innovative choreographic explorations, exemplified by works such as 'Harir-e-Live' (2024), 'Spotlight on Shadows' for the NGV Triennial 2021 in Melbourne, and 'Road Crossers’ Club' for the Hamdasti fellowship in Kolkata (2020). Her PhD project reflects her commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, incorporating Indian classical dance vocabularies into score-based choreography, interactive and immersive performances, as well as embracing cutting-edge technologies like Photogrammetry scanning and 3D modelling for virtual reality (VR).
