About

Prof. (Dr.) Susmita Bhattacharya is currently serving as the Principal of Jhargram Government Medical College since June, 2023.

She served in various substantive capacities in the West Bengal Health Service (WBHS) from 1991 till 2000. She joined the West Bengal Medical Education Service (WBMES) in 2000 and has been in service to date. She was promoted to the post of Assistant Professor in 2003, Associate Professor in 2009 and Professor in 2013.

Academically, she was conferred upon an M.B.B.S. by the University of Calcutta (CU) in 1988, an M.D. (Microbiology) with University Gold Medal by the University of Calcutta (CU) in 2003 and a Ph.D. by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) in 2018.

Professionally, she registered with the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) in 1990. In an administrative capacity, she served as the Head of Department of Microbiology, College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital from June 2018 to June 2023. She has published a number of research articles and conference papers and partakes in collaborative research works.

She espouses the noble cause of facilitating better access to quality healthcare and emergency treatment to poor and marginalized communities of the society. Furthermore, she advocates the dissemination of peer-reviewed medical information to the populace for infection prevention, hand hygiene and sanitation. Moreover, she supports prescription auditing and restricted usage of antimicrobials. In addition, she actively promotes inclusivity in higher education catering to the needs of the students from marginal communities and peripheral settlements and villages. Withal, she endorses the setting-up of a democratic milieu in universities and institutions of higher learning and pledges to uphold the freedom of speech and expression as envisaged under the Constitution of India.
