About
I am Dr Amar Deshpande, MS, FRCS (Surgery in General), FRCS (General Surgery), a Consultant Surgical Oncologist (Breast) and Head of the Division of Breast Surgery at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Education and Research in Cancer, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. I am an internationally trained oncoplastic breast surgeon with over two decades of experience across the UK and India, with a strong focus on advancing breast cancer surgery through innovation, education, and service transformation.
I currently serve as International Advisor to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and have been elected as an International Council Member of the Association of Breast Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.
During my tenure in the UK, I held key leadership positions including Lead Clinician for Breast Services and Clinical Director of General Surgery. I have been involved in pioneering high-volume day-case breast cancer surgery and implementing enhanced recovery pathways, resulting in reduced hospital stays and improved patient outcomes. My work in service redesign has received national recognition, including commendation at the BMJ Awards.
I have a strong passion for surgical education and postgraduate training. I was instrumental in establishing the MCh programme in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk, UK, and have supervised higher surgical trainees. I have also served as an FRCS and MRCS examiner, contributing to curriculum development and surgical education standards.
I have an extensive academic portfolio with multiple peer-reviewed publications and international presentations at leading conferences. I regularly contribute as invited faculty at global breast surgery meetings, where I deliver lectures, conduct live operative workshops, and participate in multidisciplinary discussions on contemporary oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery techniques.
